Sonic the Hedgehog is getting the live-action movie treatment and it appears to be the exact opposite of Detective Pikachu. One looks pretty damn good. The other looks like complete manure.
Sonic the Hedgehog was my ish growing up. While all my friends were becoming Nintendo diehards, we were a Sega household. I started with the Sega Master System and then moved onto the Sega Genesis.
The movie stars X-Men movie’s worst Cyclops, James Marsden, as the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, and Jim Carey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz. It is directed by Jeff Fowler, who is making his theatrical directorial debut with this monstrosity.
Now, yes, it could just be a poorly cut trailer, but it doesn’t look like we’re missing much here. This looks bad. The visuals are freaking weird and by weird, I mean pretty terrible. This is like Mario Brothers movie level bad. I find Sonic’s chicklet teeth especially disturbing.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
The film is being distributed by Paramount Pictures with a $90 million budget and has a release date of November 8, 2019.
